The Amalfi Coast: Cliffside Italy at Its Most Romantic
Positano, Ravello, and a coast road carved into the cliffs. How to do the Amalfi Coast — where to base, getting around by boat, and when to go.
The Amalfi Coast is a 30-mile stretch of southern Italian coastline where pastel villages spill down cliffs to the sea, lemon groves perfume the air, and a famously hair-raising road threads it all together. It is Italy at its most romantic — and, in August, its most crowded. Done right, it’s one of Europe’s great escapes.
Where to base
- Positano — the postcard: a vertical cascade of pink-and-ochre houses above a pebble beach. Gorgeous, glamorous, pricey, and lots of stairs.
- Ravello — high above the coast, serene and refined, with sublime garden villas and views. The romantic, quieter choice.
- Amalfi & Atrani — the historic town with a striking cathedral, plus its tiny, lovely neighbor.
- Sorrento (just outside) — a larger, well-connected base that’s easier and better value, with ferries along the coast.
Getting around (take the boat)
The coast road is spectacular but slow, narrow, and jammed in season. The smart move is to travel by ferry between towns where you can — faster, far less stressful, and beautiful. For the road itself, consider a driver rather than your own car.
What to do
Boat to Capri for the day, wander Ravello’s Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone, hike the Path of the Gods above the coast, eat lemon everything, and linger over long seaside lunches. It pairs naturally with Pompeii and Naples nearby.
When to go
May–June and September are ideal — warm, swimmable, and far less mobbed than July–August, when the coast is at its hottest and most crowded. Many businesses wind down by November.
Honest trade-offs
- Crowds and prices in peak summer. Shoulder season transforms the experience.
- Stairs and steep terrain everywhere — challenging with mobility limits or heavy luggage.
- It’s a splurge in the headline towns; Sorrento or a day-trip base softens the cost.
Who it’s for
Couples and lovers of Italy who want drama, food, and romance over a beach-resort vacation. Torn between this and Greece? Compare with Santorini, or run the matcher.
